Causes of Bad Breath

Bad breath, also known as halitosis can be caused by a number of factors. Some of these things can be easily resolved, while others might be a sign of a more serious problem.

Strong foods like onions and garlic can cause bad breath. Their powerful odors can linger in the mouth and upper throat permeating your breath. Brushing and flossing along with using an antiseptic mouthwash can usually resolve the problem.

Tobacco products can also have a serious and long lasting negative impact on your breath. Tar and other chemicals in tobacco can stain teeth, impede saliva production and linger on your breath for some time to come. If you use tobacco products regularly you should talk to your doctor about a smoking cessation program.

The condition known as dry mouth impedes saliva production. Saliva is essential to overall oral health and also helps wash away food particles. Dry mouth can have several causes, be sure to ask your dentist about it if the problem persists.

Bad breath can also be a sign of a serious infection in the mouth or gum tissue. There are several medical conditions including problems with the liver and kidneys that can be an underlying cause of bad breath.

If you can’t pin down the exact source, you should contact your doctor or dentist to schedule an appointment.
